At the culmination of the week-long unit on Immigration,
each class will begin a service learning project which will include the following five steps:
1. An investigation of the manner in which the skills and interests of the students in the class can be put to practical use in solving the problems uncovered in the class study of Immigration.
2. Making a plan for a class project on Immigration.
3. Implementing the plan.
4. Reflecting on their participation in the project.
5. Demonstrating their projects to the other classes.

Suggested Class projects:
- Assist at an after school ESL tutoring program at our school
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen in the local community - http://www.theencouragementcenter.org/home0.aspx
- Create a Public Service Announcement video about the topic of immigration
- Assemble an oral history of the immigrants in the area
- Write a proposal for a state or federal law on the topic of immigration
- Research one aspect of immigration and write a letter to an elected official or public forum (such as the op-ed column of a newspaper) about the findings
- Design a mural about immigration
- Write and produce a play about immigration
- Volunteer to help mentor students in the school who are newly-arrived immigrants
